Renovating a bathroom can be exciting, but it's also easy to make mistakes that can lead to costly repairs or a space that doesn't function well. Here are seven common bathroom renovation mistakes and how to avoid them:

1. Inadequate Planning - with a little time, this is an easily avoidable bathroom renovation mistake!

  • Mistake: Starting the renovation without a clear plan can lead to confusion, delays, and unexpected costs. Have you ever scheduled a plumber only to realize not all of your fixtures had arrived? I can tell you from experience, its not a cheap mistake! Those trip charges add up.

  • Solution: Before you begin, create a detailed plan that includes your budget, timeline, layout, and materials. Consider hiring a professional designer or contractor to help you with the planning process.

  • Recommendation: We offer an e-design service (yes, completely virtual!) that will eliminate the stressors of having too many choices by providing you with a clear vision of 3-dimensional views, a mood board, and a shopping list custom tailored to your style. This small investment could save so much time and money!

2. Overlooking Ventilation

  • Mistake: Poor ventilation can lead to mold, mildew, and damage to fixtures and finishes. Listen, we all like to take long, hot, steamy showers. But did you know that excess moisture in the air is the #1 reason for mold and mildew build up?

  • Solution: Ensure your bathroom has adequate ventilation, either through an OPEN window or an exhaust fan. I know showering with the window open isn't an option 100% of the time so lets look at exhaust fans. Choose one with a more than adequate CFM rate. CFM, or cubic feet per minute, is tech talk for how fast this fan is going to blow the moisture particles around the room effectively breaking them up. In my experience, fans are marketed to do the bare minimum for you so I'd ere on caution and just buy one that has a high number of CFMs.

  • Recommendation: I have a 5'x10' bathroom, or 50 square feet. I use this fan and no matter how long or hot my showers are, I've yet to see moisture build up on my walls and countertop since installing!

3. Choosing the Wrong Materials

  • Mistake: Using materials that aren’t suited for the bathroom environment can lead to issues like water damage and deterioration.

  • Solution: Opt for moisture-resistant materials like porcelain tiles, waterproof paint, and treated wood. Avoid using materials like wallpaper or regular drywall in areas prone to moisture.

  • Recommendation:  Now I know using natural stone will increase the value of your home. In this scenario, it is imperative you seal your stone! Stone sealer not only will protect your stone from stains, but moisture will no longer be able to penetrate. This means moisture will bead up on top, allowing the air dry process to occur. Remember, natural stones are thirsty!

4. Neglecting Storage

  • Mistake: A lack of storage can lead to clutter and a disorganized bathroom.

  • Solution:  Plan for sufficient storage, including cabinets, shelves, and built-in niches. Use vertical space to maximize storage, and consider installing vanity units with drawers instead of doors for better organization.

  • Recommendation: Don't worry if a custom vanity isn't in the budget. This organizer made the best out of our storage needs! It is easy to install and even easier to keep clean! Definitely makes the most out of limited storage options.

5. Improper Plumbing Layout

  • Mistake: Hiring a plumber to just swap out fixtures, neglecting the opportunity to raise your showerhead, move the on/off valve in a more reachable location, or mounting your vanity faucet on the wall.

  • Solution: Focus on functionality when designing the layout. If you have tall family, raise the shower head! Is this bathroom being remodeled for the safety of elders? Relocate the on/off valve to where they will be seated in the shower. Even simply opting for a wall mounted sink faucet can elevate any design.

  • Recommendation:  Be open and honest with your plumber about why you are remodeling. You would be surprised about the tips and tricks they have up there sleeve to showcase their plumbing skills in the best way possible for you with out breaking the bank. Remember, they'll want your before and after photos just as badly as you do when its all done!
