What is Japandi Design?
Japandi design is a hybrid interior design style that blends elements of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian functionality. It is merging two design philosophies that both value simplicity, craftsmanship, and the beauty of natural materials. This fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics results in a serene, balanced, and highly functional design style that feels both modern and timeless.
How to Decorate in Japandi Style:
Here are the key features of the Japandi Interior Design Style:
Minimalism:
Both Japanese and Scandinavian styles focus on decluttering spaces and using only essential items. The result is a clean, open environment with a sense of calm and serenity.
Natural Materials:
Wood, bamboo, stone, and other organic materials dominate Japandi spaces. These materials create a connection to nature, which is central to both design traditions.
Neutral Color Palette:
The color scheme often features muted, earthy tones such as soft grays, beige, cream, and pale wood. Sometimes, darker hues like black or charcoal are used as accents, which contrasts with the lighter Scandinavian style.
Functional Design:
Japandi prioritizes functionality, with furniture that serves a purpose while maintaining a sleek aesthetic. Pieces are often multi-functional and practical without unnecessary ornamentation.
Craftsmanship:
There is a focus on high-quality craftsmanship. Furniture and decor items are made with attention to detail, showcasing artisanal techniques and durable materials.
Wabi-sabi Influence:
Japandi incorporates the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which emphasizes the beauty in imperfection and the passage of time. This can be seen in hand-crafted items or the subtle imperfections in natural materials.
Warmth with Simplicity:
While both Japanese and Scandinavian designs are minimalist, Japandi adds warmth through textiles, soft lighting, and natural textures, avoiding a cold or sterile feel.

Japandi Design Floor Plan
A Japandi style bathroom floor plan should blend the minimalist elegance of Japanese design with Scandinavian functionality by focusing on overall layout and flow, as well as zoning. The bathroom should feel spacious, uncluttered, and serene. Avoid unnecessary partitions or barriers, and aim for an open plan where each zone is clearly defined but flows harmoniously. We did this by changing out the flooring for the wet areas to a pebble mosaic. Each area should have a clear function without crowding the space.
