With the cost of grocery trips skyrocketing. I want to show you 2 sure-fire ways to save money on spices. Good, nourishing food starts with quality ingredients so don't let sticker shock stop you from getting the right ingredients for your body.
1. Buying per Ounce
Buying spices by the ounce is one way you can save money at the grocery store.
Spices are often listed somewhere between $2-$5. And all of the bottles are the same height, suggesting the same amount of spice is in each bottle. WRONG. Although the volume appears to be the same, after further inspecting the bottle, you'll see that a bottle of parsley is considerably lighter than a bottle of garlic powder so why is it that they are the same price? This is a marketing strategy that targets convenience so large profits can be made on the markup.
The best items to use this shopping method on are pantry staples like flour, sugar, oats, spices, as well as rice and bean varieties. I've even seen some stores carry higher end items like loose teas, coffee and nuts!
If you're interested in trying this method, I pop over to google and search "zero waste stores near me." these local shops generally will permit you to buy without the fancy packaging. To get the job done, bring your own container, or use one of their provided baggies.
Two grocers that I know of who sell by the ounce are Whole Foods Market as well as Sprouts Farmers Market. I shop at Sprouts.
Unsure how to organize all these loose spices? Check out this post on spice drawer organization featuring my favorite glass jars!
2. Make Your Own Spice Blends
Have you ever looked at the ingredients on the back of your favorite spice blend? They list all of the ingredients for you to make it yourself!!
When you make your own spice blends, not only are you able to customize them to your exact liking, but your also cutting out the preservatives. If its your favorite spice, I promise your body won't miss the anti caking agent and dyes!
3. Make Your Own Spices to Save Money on Spices
Yes, it is entirely possible to make your own spices at home. You may want to sit down for this but paprika comes from dehydrated and ground up red peppers 🤯. Some spicy, some regular bell peppers, as long as they are red!
There's a whole list of flavors I implore you to explore next time you see a deal on a fruit or vegetable. Lemon Pepper? Dehydrated lemon zest with ground peppercorn. Or have you ever tried carrot powder? This adds a lovely color to dishes and a mild sweetness
You can use a dehydrator like the one I have below, or .set your oven to the lowest possible heat setting. I'll be sure to teach you all about a dehydrating in another post!
