Before I became an online bathroom designer, I designed kitchens and bathrooms for local contractors. And before that I sold finish materials like tile, plumbing, and electrical for bathrooms which in itself involved a lot of design work. I did this for 8 years and definitely felt stuck in my career path. I was so envious I would never make as much money as the installers! I mean, I put in so much effort to sell these beautiful bathrooms to home owners. My ego told me that any installer who was deaf, dumb and blind could put together my design packages - that's how detailed they were. So, I put my big girl pants on and took on a bathroom installation project for a family friend.
This is that bathroom.
The Challenges
As does every project, this bathroom had its own set of challenges.
Keeping the Floor Tile
I always encourage my clients to consider keeping an element if it is in good condition. Bringing new life to something is so much more cost efficient than tearing everything out and buying new. In this bathroom, we wanted to keep the existing flooring, as it ran throughout the entire home resulting in zero thresholds (nice 👍)
Chunky Floating Shelves
Another challenge was to match the floating shelves to our new vanity. The shelves in this bathroom ended up being custom built because we could not find a store bought shelf that was the 3" thickness we wanted. We then stained them to match our vanity as close as possible. The vanity color is a veneer, versus real wood, so matching our real wood shelves with a fake wood vanity was the trick. After several swatches and trips to the hardware store, we were able to find a stain that worked.
Bathtub Plumbing
I always, always, always recommend hiring qualified, licensed installers especially for the plumbing work. I had the bathtub replaced by a local plumbing company. The existing tub was cast iron, so cutting it up to get it out was way more work than I wanted anyone to take on. Together, we decided on taking it out whole, which meant taking down the half wall, and then rebuilding it. Not only did the plumbing contractor rebuild the wall that his pipes were going into, he also was able to navigate his pipes around a shampoo niche located in the other bathroom for the shower head. If you find a plumber willing to pipe anything, anywhere, they are a keeper! I had a peek at their pipe design to make my interior design work and let me just say WOW.
Green Tile with Natural Wood Accents Mood Board
Because this project was done in person, I do attribute many final selections of this bathroom to the homeowner. She has a fantastic eye for design and was very in touch with her own style. We reviewed so many different shades of green subway tile together until we found one that worked well with our existing floor tile. I presented several mock ups of tile designs so we could identify the patterns and layout of our two very different wall tiles. The rustic, handmade look of the green tile is so polar opposite of the white, wave tile. Together, they balanced each other out adding that modern flair. This bathroom aptly took on the name 'Emerald Haven' in my portfolio because that rich green tile!

3 Dimensional Design for Emerald Haven
To assist in the selection process, I added the finishes into a 3D program for the client to view. Its difficult to see our vision when the whole bathroom was gutted and down to the studs! We were able to fully envision our green tiles with natural wood accents this way so everything was balanced.
Green Tile with Natural Wood Accents Project Reveal
The finished look of this bathroom hit all the right notes of modern elegance with a natural feel. The white tile balanced many components out in this bathroom. not only did it mute the boldness of the green tile, but it also added a refined feel back into the space with its modern wave texture compared to the hand glazed, rustic look of the green tile. Not only that, but the white pop balanced out all the black fixture and hardware finishes out in a Zen-like way. The whole vibe is giving Ying and Yang.
