Funfetti sprinkles cookie recipe that is fun and easy for kids

The holidays are about to begin with Halloween only a week and a half away. This weekend, we did all the fall things including taking the kids (5 and 9 years) to a fair to enjoy the bounce houses, get their face painted and enjoy fall foods from various vendors! On Sunday, to top our weekend off, we enjoyed a day full of football and baked the easiest kid friendly cookies ever, and I mean easy! Have you ever noticed I take my photos primarily at my kitchen sink? That's because I have zero counter top space! I moved a side table from my living room so the kitchen aid mixer was kid height. I pre measured all the ingredients and we read the recipe together. I hope you have a great weekend baking with our same recipe 🤗

Ingredients for Easy Kid Friendly Cookie Recipe

  • Flour:

    • I used all purpose flour in this recipe. I haven't experimented enough with gluten free flours to give any recommendations, but let me know in the comments below if you've had success with this recipe using gluten free flours!

  • Sugar:

    • If you don't have enough white sugar for this recipe, swap for equal parts of brown sugar. Although this recipe is already chewy, brown sugar will enhance that chewiness! It will also add a little bit of color, you can see here that my cookies are very blonde.

  • Baking soda:

    • make sure your baking soda gets sifted and mixed in well with the flour. I skipped this step with my kids so we could just dump and get straight to the sprinkles... the cookies still came out great, but a few ended up tasting like 100% baking soda. My husband and I now have an inside joke about a chancy game of roulette we inadvertently created 😂

  • Vanilla Extract:

    • This is one of those recipes where you can experiment with different flavored extracts successfully. Did you know there are soooo many different types of extract flavors other than vanilla?! To experiment with other flavors, I would do 1/2 tsp extract flavor of your choice, and 2 1/2vanilla.

  • eggs

  • salt

  • unsalted butter

  • Sprinkles

    • Sprinkles are the main event here so use any kind you like! I called these sprinkles Halloween Sprinkles for the kids but they were actually left overs from a dinosaur themed birthday party I hosted 2 weeks ago shhhhh 🤫Here are the exact sprinkles I used

Storing and Freezing

Holiday cookie season is QUICKLY approaching. Make this recipe up to a week in advance. Store the dough in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use. You may have to let it come to room temperature on the counter for about an hour for easy scooping.

Freezing the dough is also a great idea to save time. Pre-scoop all of your cookies and freeze them on a single layer on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen, you can transfer to a larger ziplock bag for storage and space saving. You can cook these frozen cookie dough balls right from frozen! Increase your baking time 2-3 minutes.

When Are They Done?

These cookies are very blonde, meaning, they won't get much browning color while baking. This is meant to let the sprinkles really pop, which is all the kids will care about. These cookies will be done baking when the bottom side begins to brown. As the cookies cool, they will firm up but still have that great chewy texture

Tips for Baking Cookies with Kids

When babysitting, I always try to include the kids when cooking or baking. The fun activity encourages them to try new foods as an end result as they will be just as excited to taste their masterpiece as they were to help out. This is especially helpful if preparing a meal that is very veggie forward!

For baking, here are my pointers to keep the mess minimal, and stress low.

  1. Pre-measure Everything

    1. As the kids were playing in the next room over, I quietly measured out the ingredients. I did not let them know what I was doing until This Photo of Ingredients was taken. Remember, younger kids are still learning to be patient. I find they struggle watching me handle all the ingredients first so I don't call them over until everything is all set.

    2. If everything is pre-measured, you can trust the flavor and that the bake process will come out right. When baking more complicated recipes, like cakes, you'll need some precision in ingredient measuring to ensure you get a soft moist cake with a perfect crumb.

  2. Cover Your Work Areas

    1. To make clean up a breeze, cover your work station with tinfoil, wrapping paper, newspaper. anything really that you can quickly crumble up and toss. You'll be surpised how far the sprinkes and flour will get from the bowl even when you've pre-measured!

  3. Cookie Scoop

    1. Get your self a cookie scoop. A lot can happen between the time you go wash your hands and the kids are sprinkling away. ALOT. If your hands remain clean the whole time, you'll be less tempted to walk away leaving them unsupervised.
