This bathroom remodel is ranked in my top favorite projects I've completed because it was actually the first bathroom I designed and tiled myself for a client. I named this bathroom, the Beach Bathroom because I was also tiling their guest bathroom at the same time which was very green (details on that project here).
Prior to this project, I was only designing bathrooms and preparing estimates for local contractors. In short, I'm well practiced in identifying areas of water intrusion resulting in higher estimates to benefit the contractor who hired me and then turning around to provide complimentary design solutions, to stay in budget for the home owner based off tile sizes, patterns, benches, and water features, etc.
I did this type of work for years and realized I wasn't getting any credit, or building my own portfolio because everything belonged to the contractors who hired me.
This bathroom changed everything.
This Beach Bathroom with before and after remodel photos allowed me to finally see a project be built under my own name. I went on to tile 4 more bathrooms after this! The most challenging part of this bathroom was tiling the ceiling, keep reading to learn great DIY tips!
Before Photos
Whenever I inspect a bathroom for quoting, I pay close attention to areas adjacent to where the project will be. I do this to identify areas that may be less than favorable once demo has begun. I might not have x-ray vision to see inside walls, but there are always signs of hidden damage. I had always hated seeing my homeowners get back charges so I like to be up front and thorough with my initial estimate.
Signs of water damage means a little more work is involved other than tiling to get this bathroom back to tip top shape. Some studs may need to be replaced if they rotted or molded over as well as some drywall patching and painting to address the area outside of the shower. Not to mention a little more plumbing work other than a shower head replacement is typically involved.
The homeowner was 100% aware of this water issue... that's why we were remodeling in the first place!
Installation Challenges of Beach Bathroom Remodel With Before and After Photo
Demolition of the Beach Bathroom
Demolition is normally a straight forward process; dismantle and throw away anything you don't want to keep. That included framing of 2 entire walls and the soffit above! I'm only 5 feet tall and did I mention this was my first remodel?!
Waterproofing the Shower with Wedi Foam Board
I'm certified in the installation of Wedi Waterproofing systems. This isn't a sponsored post, just simply someone who has studied specification sheets and cost analysis data for bathroom remodels, I genuinely prefer using Wedi over many other installation methods. I can do an entire separate post on the pros and cons of Wedi, but what wins me over every time is how lightweight and customizable this waterproofing system is. I was able to waterproof the shower in just a few hours
Cutting a Hole in Tile Only Using a Wet Saw
Don't over complicate your cuts. To cut tiles without a drill bit, chamfer cone, or angle grinder simply place the tile on the bed of your wet saw and make several slits. With a glove on, you can then press on the slits and they should snap right out. Pick the tile up and use on your wet saw blade to clean up any jagged bits that remain.
Without the appropriate tools, don't expect it to come out perfect. Thankfully, a lighting fixture goes on top of this tile and will cover these unsightly cuts entirely! This is a great tile cutting tip if buying more tools just aren't in your budget!

3 Dimensional Design for Beach Bathroom Remodel
To assist in the selection process, I added the finishes into a 3D program for the client to view. It can be difficult to see our vision when the whole bathroom was gutted and down to the studs! While we waited for the plumbers to do their thing and fix the leak, my client and I were able to finalize materials with these 3D views.
